Gluten-Free-Dairy-Free-Sloppy-Joes-on-Potatoes

Good old fashioned Sloppy Joes.  They have been around forever.  I remember eating them growing up, except they came from a spice packet mixed with tomato sauce and water.  I remember them having a distinct flavor, somewhat overpowering.  I thought they were okay.  Then when I began to cook, I searched for homemade recipes and tried them for awhile.  I am still searching for an all natural recipe that blows me away.  So far the search continues, but in the meantime I have come up with my own concoction that tastes great.  It is made from all of the ingredients you would find in your pantry.  Yes it is natural (which means it does not have any preservatives) and void of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) or forms of MSG (Monosodium Glutamate). Besides the fact that is has a great flavor, it is also quick and easy.  All you need is BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard, and pepper.  I believe the secret is the BBQ sauce. (Make sure to read all of the ingredients on your BBQ sauce and ketchup.  Learn all of the different names for MSG and check your bottles to be certain they are HFCS free.)

Sloppy Joes

  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 TBSP prepared mustard
  • pepper to taste
  • diced onion (optional)

Brown hamburger and onion in frying pan.   When hamburger is cooked, drain grease and sprinkle pepper on meat.  Add bbq sauce, ketchup, and mustard.  Simmer for 10 minutes.  Makes a great addition on top of a baked potato for those that are gluten-free.  For a spicier kick, add more pepper after tasting.

As a mother of 5 children, I have a great desire to feed my children all natural healthy foods. In the beginning of 2011, two of my children were diagnosed with epilepsy. With that diagnosis came intense diet changes, which included a gluten free, dairy free, and corn free diet.
